It was more than an opportunity to enjoy winter! It was an opportunity to try cross country skiing for the very first time! The Blind River Cross Country ski club extended the invitation to our six primary and secondary schools, our local hospital, our largest employer Cameco and Mississauga First Nation community! We offered free skis, boots and poles, free ski lessons and an opportunity to ski on our beautiful Boom Camp Trails. The response was overwhelming with 333 students participating and we are continuing to offer the opportunity to enjoy this amazing sport called Cross Country Skiing! Thanks to the World Snow Day organization we were able to subsidize busing for the schools who otherwise would not have been able to participate. In addition to inviting the schools to participate, we also had our Learn to ski program for children 6 - 8 years, learn to skate ski for children 9 and older, our adult learn to ski program and our weekly biathlon program. The kids loved it and many said that they want to continue cross country skiing and enjoying the outdoors as it was "a lot of fun"! January can be a dark month for many so every opportunity we have to engage outdoor activities is beneficial both for our physical and mental well being. I can honestly say that this was an event of gratitude for all who had the privilege to participate.
